A roomful of older residents attended Hazelnuts’ annual Holiday Party held recently at Civic Center East. In addition to the regular monthly meeting, they were entertained with prize and gift giveaways, holiday music, and a buffet-style luncheon prepared by The Savoy Banquet Center in Ferguson. The City of Hazelwood’s new City Manager Matthew Zimmerman was on hand to introduce himself and take part in the festivities.
The main feature of the monthly meeting was the installation of Hazelnuts’ new officers for 2014. Hazelwood’s City Clerk Colleen Wolf was there to administer the Oath of Office ceremony for the following individuals: President – Carol Powitzky; Vice-President – Ruth Podorski; Secretary – Marjorie King; and Treasurer – Larry O’Brien.
Members of the McCluer High School Chamber Choir performed a variety of songs ranging from Baroque-style chants to madrigals to popular holiday tunes. A lavish spread of delicious food was set up in a buffet line for everyone to enjoy, including home-made pudding for dessert. Plus, many stayed to play several rounds of Bingo.
Hazelnuts is a not-for-profit, social club organization formed specifically for older Hazelwood residents, age 55 and over. Monthly meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at Civic Center East, starting at 10 a.m. The City of Hazelwood’s senior transporation service provides rides to and from the meetings via shuttle buses if needed. Individual membership fee is $10 per year.
Hazelnuts provides older residents with a chance to socialize with others while playing Bingo and other games. The organization also offers a variety of trips such as theater performances, sightseeing and holiday light tours, and casino outings. Catered lunches, special dinners and other fun-filled activities are planned for members as well.
