Hazelwood Employees Raise Awareness about Heart Disease by Wearing Red

WearRedDay-sm2In 2004, the American Heart Association created the “Go Red for Women” campaign as a call to action initiative. The goal is to encourage, educate and empower women to understand their risk factors for heart disease and change the course of their future. Heart disease ranks as the #1 killer of women, taking the lives of one out of every three women in the United States. “Go Red for Women” is committed to changing this statistic.

In addition to wearing red, women can make a contribution to this worthy cause by shopping smart. On a yearly basis, “Go Red for Women” partners with various corporate sponsors who help promote the goals and mission of the program. For instance, in honor of “Wear Red Day,” Macy’s is offering special savings to customers from February 2-6, 2011, who remember to wear something red. For a $2 donation, those who forget to wear red can purchase a “Go Red for Women” dress pin and still receive the savings discount on their purchases. All donations go directly to the “Go Red for Women” campaign.

Other corporate sponsors creating special product offerings, donating a percentage of sales or pledging direct donations include the following: Merck; Astral Brands; Campbell Soup Company; Cutco; Geoffrey Beene Gives Back; Great Call/Jitterbug; Jewelry TV; Ocean Spray; Party City; Perfumania; Princess House; Rite Aid; SuperValu; and Yankee Candle. Some of these cause-related programs are not limited to the month of February, but carried on throughout the year.

Monies raised for the “Go Red for Women” campaign are used to fund research which is focused on women’s heart health issues, programs to educate women about heart health, as well as tools and conferences for doctors and healthcare professionals.  Forty percent of funds goes directly to public education. Another 23 percent is spent on research regarding women’s heart issues with 13 percent going toward educating healthcare professionals.
